New DSU Program in Physical Science

(Madison, SD) Dakota State University has developed a degree program in Physical Sciences which is a highly modified combination of the former Chemistry and Physics degrees. Dr. Richard Bleil, Associate Professor of Chemistry, says Dakota State was interested in a new approach to the two sciences. “The new program is more reflective of what science is today,” said Dr. Bleil. “The combined approach fits in well with the DSU mission because of the strong technology integration.”

The combined degree is a standard 128-credit program, said Dr. Bleil. “It doesn’t ignore anything. Some course are all physics, some all chemistry and some classes are integrated,” he said. “It’s intended to be a flexible, powerful degree.”

Dr. Bleil says this is an excellent program for a wide range of students. “It’s a very powerful track for science students, as well as for business students interested in management tracks in pharmaceutical or chemical industries. Pre-med students who complete the program will have all of the prerequisites for medical schools nationally and would be ready for just about anything. Secondary Education majors in Physical Science would be in high demand because of the great shortage of teachers in those areas,” said Bleil.  In fact, any student with a science background would benefit from the program.

The program is designed to start off slowly with the traditional concepts of chemistry and physics and then soar into a world of computer simulations and modern techniques. “You have to build up to it,” said Dr. Bleil. “Students will have a better understanding of the program going through the traditional side first. They will know when and how to apply their education to the real world.”

Although the Physical Sciences program only came into existence this fall, five students have already enrolled in it. “Students who enroll in this program will be able to find better, higher paying positions.” Dr. Bleil said. “I believe the numbers will increase as industries find out we’re offering this unique degree. One student already chose to come to Dakota State because of the program’s uniqueness.” Dr. Bleil added.
