Community Center Joint Powers Agreement Approved Madison – At its meeting in Pierre yesterday, the
South Dakota Board of Regents unanimously approved the Joint Powers of Agreement
between the city of Madison and Dakota State University for the Madison
Community Wellness Center. “The Board of Regents was very complimentary of the
partnership between the city and the university. They were also pleased with the progress in construction the
project had made so far,” said Mark Lee, Vice-President for Business and
Administrative Services at DSU. The construction of the Community Center, which began last
July, is remaining on schedule with completion set for Fall 2000.
According to Pat Keating, physical plant director at DSU, a number of
construction projects are underway. All roofing is in place except for trim,
mechanical and plumbing systems are being put together, the framing of stud
walls for sheet rock has begun, and the walking track is in place and concrete
has been poured. On Monday, workers began digging for the pool, which will
take approximately four months to complete. “The Governing Board, which has begun its work, can now
proceed with complete certainty regarding the contractual agreement between the
city and the university,” said Lee. “This
concludes the formal approvals needed by the Board of Regents or the State of
South Dakota with respect to the Community Center project.” The agreement was also approved by the City Commission last night. “We are looking forward to a productive and meaningful working relationship between DSU and the City of Madison during this project,” said Royce Hueners, Mayor of Madison.
