APPENDIX C:

Structure And Governance Of Student Affairs

The vice president and dean of student affairs, together with the directors of the student services programs, is responsible for providing services that contribute to the personal and professional growth of students. The vice president and dean of student affairs has direct responsibility for the Bookstore, Conferencing / Dakota Prairie Playhouse, Food Service (delivered via a vendor contract with Fine Host, Inc.), Residence Halls, Student Activities, Student Development, and Trojan Center. To support the academic functions of the institution, the vice president and dean of student affairs also directs the activities of and receives guidance from these institutional committees / advisory groups: Student Association Senate, Student Media Board, General Activity Fund Allocations Committee, Cultural Activities Committee, University Disciplinary Board and the Vending Committee.

Student Affiars

Mission: The mission of Student Affairs is to provide programs, services, and facilities that directly contribute to the personal growth of students and that enable students to be as successful as possible in their scholarly activities.

FY00 Strategic Initiatives: In addition to the on-going programs and services provided to students, Student Affairs has identified these strategic initiatives:

1. Skill Building — Provide students with an opportunity to be involved in activities designed to influence the quality of campus life and in programs promoting citizenship and leadership development via:

• Service learning programs.
• Leadership training workshops. 
• Student organizations. 
• Extra-curricular activities.

2. Student Persistence _ Provide increased efforts aimed at building the assets of individual students via:

• Case management of students on academic probation.
• Freshman Success Seminars structured around learning communities. 
• Strengthened student contact with academic advisors. 
• Intrusive counseling of students exhibiting inappropriate behavior.

3. Diversity Awareness - Heighten campus awareness of other cultures, particularly those represented by minority and international students. Through this understanding, make the campus more welcoming to these students and more responsive to their perceptions and needs via:

• Sponsored speakers.
• Sponsored diversity activities 
• Collaboration with other elements of the institution to promote diversity awareness.

4. Auxiliary Operations - Increase net income v. expenditures of the 5 auxiliary operations (Bookstore, Conferencing / Dakota Prairie Playhouse, Food Service, Residence Halls, Trojan Center) to enhance the institution's ability to accomplish M&R improvements.

• University Card - Expand opportunities to use the University Card both on- and off-campus. 

• Explore new hardware and software, including Beta testing of Special Teams, Inc. modules.
