Obituary Index of the Madison Daily Leader

This database is an index to the obituaries published in the Madison Daily Leader ( located in Madison, Lake County, South Dakota ).  To obtain copies of obituaries, please read how to order an obituary found in Obituary Index or how to order an obituary when not found in Obituary Index.  

You may also want to look at Cemetery records of Lake County, South Dakota, provided online by the Smith-Zimmerman Museum. 

Type in the LAST name for which you are searching and click Submit. [Variations in first names -- spellings, etc. -- may cause problems if the first name is included in the search]. Then use the navigation buttons (right arrow to Next screen; left arrow to Previous screen) to browse the records that match your criteria. For help searching, read the search tips below.

Searching can be easier and more efficient if you follow the tips below:

• Enter a last name.  Although you can enter last name, first name, or both, searching only by last name will improve your chances of finding the person. For example, if you enter Johnson in the last name box and click submit, the search would yield any records with a Johnson last name.  
• You can use the "%" character as a wildcard.  For example, if you were searching for a name, but couldn't recall if it was Smit or Smith, you would type Smit% in the last name search field.  The search would yield any last names that begin with smit

 If you find the obituary in the Obituary Index, you may order it in one of the following 2 ways: 

1. Request your local library to obtain the obituary for you through Interlibrary Loan.  It is your responsibility to provide your local library with the complete citation for the obituary that you found in the Obituary Index.

Many libraries offer interlibrary loan services for free, and the Mundt Library will not charge your library for the obituary. 

HOWEVER:  We do not provide Interlibrary Loan services without a complete citation. The  complete citation that you take to your local library (and that we receive from them) must include all of the following from the Obituary Index:

·         first and last name of the person

·         date in which the obituary was published in the Madison Daily Leader 

·         page and column where obituary is located 

2. Request the obituary directly from the Mundt Library by following these instructions:

a. Provide the complete citation; include all of the following from the Obituary Index:

·         first and last name of the person

·         date in which the obituary was published in the Madison Daily Leader 

·         page and column where obituary is located 

b. include with your request a check for $5.00 made out to:

c. include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) 

d. send your obituary request, $5.00, and SASE to:

If you cannot find the Madison Daily Leader obituary that you need in the Obituary Index, request that we manually search for the obituary. For this kind of request, you must:

1. provide the following information

• full name (at least first and last names) of person
• date of death

2. include with your request a check for $25.00 made out to:

3. include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) 

4. send your obituary request, $25.00 and SASE to:
