Guide to Literary Research

This guide first introduces a research process for literary research and then provides examples of types of resources used in literary research that are available in the Mundt Library, online through Mundt Library databases, and free on the Web.  Note to Distance Students: This guide is designed for both on-campus and off-campus students and refers to print materials in the Mundt Library in addition to sources available online.   If you are having difficulty with your research, please investigate Mundt Library's services for DSU distance students.

A briefer "quick" guide to literary research is available  -- see Literary QuickPath

A.  Introduction : Research Process

Follow this process for solving literary research problems

    1. Analyze the problem:  What question(s) do you need answered?

    2. Develop a research strategy:  What type of information do you need and want?  What  tools (databases, etc.) will lead to the types of sources you want?

    3.  Locate the information -- Search for and find the information using the tools and sources
identified in Step 2.

    4.  Use the information --Engage (read, hear, or view) the information and extract what you
want to use (take notes, copy, cite)

    5.  Synthesize the information -- Integrate the information from various sources to
answer your question or complete your paper, speech, project, etc.

These five steps are based on the "big six skills" for solving information problems described by Michael B.Eisenberg and Robert E. Berkowitz in Information Problem-Solving: the Big Six Skills Approach to Library & Information Skills Instruction (Norwood, NJ: Ablex Publishing, 1990).

1.  Analyze the problem

  • What question(s) do you need answered?
  • Highlight the terms used in your questions (and write down alternative words, synonyms, and pseudonyms).  These are the terms you will use retrieve information about your topic.

2.  Develop a research strategy

a.  Analyze the question(s) from step 1 to figure out what type of information you need and want.  Do you need critical works? factual data? primary sources? summaries? definitions? background reading?

1) Will a reference tool (dictionary, encyclopedia, handbook, concordance) answer the question directly?

  • need a definition? -- find a dictionary
  • just getting started in your research and need critical overviews/definitions/list of author’s works -- find a literary encyclopedia
  • need to know where a word was used and in what context in a particular author’s works -- find a concordance
  • need an explanation of a literary concept? -- find a handbook
  • browse a library's literary reference collection for useful sources or browse literary web sites for reference tools
  • ask a librarian for help

2) Will more in-depth or exhaustive knowledge be required?

3) Will current critical articles on a literary topic be needed?

  • need critical  journal articles about a particular author? a particular genre? a particular literary theory?
  • need critical journal articles about a work (short story, novel, etc.) by a specific author?

            b.  Select the tools (databases, etc.) that lead to the types of sources you want.

1)  search electronic library catalogs -- to identify published materials such as books (monographs), dictionaries, encyclopedias, and concordances. Tools include:

2) search periodical indexes to find citations to journal articles on literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore in journals and series published worldwide.  [These indexes may also provide citations for  books, essay collections, working papers, proceedings, dissertations, and bibliographies.]

Periodical indexes lead to important scholarly material for research papers, and some of them provide access to full articles in addition to the citations.

Search the following ....

               3)  Find material on  the open Web

  • Find numerous links to literary materials at these web sites:

Voice of the Shuttle , by Alan Liu, University of California Santa Barbara
A Literary Index: Internet Resources in Literature, by Chris Flack

    3.  Locate the information

a.  Search for and find the information using the tools and sources identified in Step 2.

b.  Evaluate: Is the search producing the material you need?

  • the right content? the right quality? right time period? right geographical locations?
  • If not, are you using the right words to describe the topic?  the right sources?  the right tools to get to the sources?

c.   Evaluate: Have you discovered additional terms that should be searched? If so, search those terms.

d.   Evaluate: Have you discovered additional questions you need to answer? If so, return to Step 1 to begin to answer new questions.

    4.  Use the information

a.  Engage (read, hear, or view) the information and extract what you want to use (take notes, copy, cite)

b. Evaluate: Does the material answer your question(s)? If not, return to earlier steps and continue.

c.  Evaluate: Is the material appropriate? -- right content? right quality? If not, return to earlier steps and continue.

    5.  Synthesize the information

a. Integrate the information from various sources to answer your question or complete your paper, speech, project, etc.

b.  Evaluate: Have you adequately answered your question(s)? made your decision? solved your problem? met all the requirements of your assignment, project, or other final product?

c.  Evaluate: Have you cited your evidence, giving credit to those who you quoted, paraphrased, or from whom you obtained ideas?

Encyclopedias  ...may focus on a specialized area such as "american literature" or" literary criticism." They provide brief or longer entries on particular literary topics or people, often with bibliographies.

 To find encyclopedias,

  • Search the Mundt Library Catalog (primarily for print encyclopedias) using, the New Library Catalog, the search:  encyclopedia*
For encyclopedic literary sources, do an Advanced search, placing encyclopedia* or dictionar*
in one search box and litera* in the next search box
  • Use web subject directories to find encyclopedias
  • Use web search engines using searches such as:   +literary +encyclopedia
However, evaluate the quality of the encyclopedia before  trusting and using it.  Evaluate if it is accurate and reliable by finding out answers to questions such as:  who is authoring it? who is publishing it? what are their qualifications for authoring the source? who is responsible for accuracy?
  • Unfortunately, encyclopedic literary sources are not always called "encyclopedias" -- as you can see in the examples provided below.  In the library catalog, subjects assigned to them may use the word "dictionary."  Sometimes, neither "encyclopedia" or "dictionary" is used in the title or subject.  Examine the descriptions of these reference sources in the example section below to get some ideas about how to search for them.

Encyclopedic literary reference sources can be good starting points for research since they provide overviews of authors and their works.  An example online is:

  • DISCovering Authors (link to DISCovering Authors and click the "Authenticate" button) --biographical, bibliographical, and critical information on 1,260 of the most studied authors from ancient times to the present.  For each author, there are two types of entries: Biography and Criticism.

A quick way to identify whether a specific author is covered by encyclopedias is to use Contemporary Authors Cumulative Index (Reference Z1224 .C6 in the Mundt Library) or search the same index on the Web where it is called Gale's Literary Index --  www.galenet.com/servlet/LitIndex

It indexes (in one place) several literary biography, literary history, and literary criticism sources published by Gale Research. For example, among the series indexed are Contemporary Authors (online), Contempory Literary Criticism (in print in library), and Dictionary of Literary Biography (in print in library)

Note to distance students --  Distance students will need to request that copies of the material in print sources be mailed or faxed from the library. Send an e-mail request for the items you need directly to library@dsu.edu -- include your 14-digit library ID number, clearly indicate that you are a currently enrolled distance student, and include the course and course number.
