Search Techniques
Previous Next

Anytime you begin to learn how to use a new electronic resource, look for certain common techniques for searching. Many search systems share these two techniques:

1. Boolean operators -- to connect words

2. truncation -- to retrieve the plural and other alternative versions of a word

***
Link to and learn about each of the above techniques before continuing.
***

Now, let's see if you can apply what you have learned. Figure out how you would enter a search about each of the following topics using Boolean operators and truncation. Then link to the answers to see if you are correct.

A. I'm looking for any information about bones or skeletons... [ Answer A. ]

B. I'd like to know more about anger in adolescents... [ Answer B. ]

C. What can I find about literary criticism of Jane Austen... [ Answer C. ]

D. I'd like to find out what products use the name "dakota" but I don't want to retrieve items about south dakota or north dakota. [ Answer D. ]

Okay, it's time to continue on and try another SDLN activity.
