Module 3: South Dakota Library Network Previous Next

The South Dakota Library Network (SDLN) is the product of a cooperative effort among all types of South Dakota libraries to provide access to their materials to the citizens of the State.

"SDLN" refers to this coalition of libraries and, also, to the electronic information service the coalition provides. Both a Web version and a telnet version of SDLN (the information service) are available. The Web version is easier to learn to use than the telnet version (which requires the use of commands).

SDLN includes several databases for research. Among these databases are library catalogs, magazine and journal indexes, newspaper indexes, and more.

When you search the Library Catalog database in SDLN, you will be able to find books and other media in libraries in South Dakota. Once you learn to search the catalog of one library in SDLN, you can easily search the catalogs of other SDLN libraries.

When you search the newspaper indexes in SDLN, you will find citations to newspaper articles that may or may not be in the SDLN libraries (but your library will be able to get the articles for you if it doesn't have them).

Some databases in SDLN are full-text reference sources -- for example, Company Profiles provides addresses, revenues and more information about individual corporations.

SDLN resources include:

1) Library catalogs.
Select database called: Library Catalog

2) Indexes to journal articles in education.
Select database called: ERIC Journals in Education

3) Reports on education, curricular materials, etc.
Select database: ERIC Resources in Education

4) Indexes to newspapers.
Select from:

a) Argus Leader Index (choose current or older)
b) Indian Country Today Index
c) Rapid City Journal Index
d) Deadwood Historical Papers Index
