Activity 2

In Activity 2,
you will search different databases and will learn more about some of the special South Dakota resources in SDLN.

You will need to switch back and forth between SDLN (to do the activity) and the manual (for instructions). Or you might find it more convenient to print this page -- "SDLN Examples and Practice: Activity 2" -- so that you can remain in SDLN as you read and follow the instructions for the activity.

Problem 2: Find out the unemployment rate in South Dakota and recent trends in the rate by finding articles.

Perform each of the following steps in the South Dakota Library Network.

1. To go to the "Select Library and Resource" screen,

  • click on the "Change Library or Database" button

which is at the bottom of most SDLN screens.

2. The best place to find articles about South Dakota is in regional publications.

SDLN has indexes to the following regional newspapers:
Argus Leader (Sioux Falls)
Deadwood Historical Papers
Indian Country Today
Rapid City Journal

Let's use the index to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader for this search.

3. To select the "Argus Leader" index,

  • click on the radio button beside "Argus Leader (19... to Present)"

and then

  • click on the "Go" button

4. You should now be looking at the "Search the Argus Leader Index (19... to Present)" screen.

Search for articles about the unemployment rate by

  • typing the search topic in the "for what" box:

unemployment and rate

The "by" should remain "keyword" and the "where" should remain "Dakota State University."

  • Click on the "Go" button.

5. To limit the results to articles published only in 1999,

  • click on the "Limit Search" button

6. To limit "by publication year,"

  • in the "during the year" box, type:

1999

  • and then click on the "Submit" button"

7. To display the titles,

  • click on "Display Records" button

8. To display the first item on the list,

  • click on the number 0001

The description provides the information you need to find the article in the print newspaper or in microfilm copies of the newspaper.
