Introduction Next

The library modules for composition courses will teach you how to find information electronically to solve information problems.

An information problem exists when you recognize that there is a gap between what you know and what you need to know to solve a problem, make a decision, write a paper, or give an oral presentation.

The explanations and activities are designed to help you learn concepts and techniques which are basic to successful research. Together, the modules create an "electronic research manual" or tutorial for anyone doing basic research at Dakota State University.

Navigating this manual

  • The first time you go through the tutorial, you are encouraged to complete every module in the order given in the Contents (on the left side of the screen).
  • However, you may select or be assigned specific modules to learn specific skills.
  • More experienced researchers can use the table of contents to select a specific module for review.

You may leave the manual at any time and continue later from the same point.

  • If you are working on your own computer, simply bookmark the page on which you stop.
  • If you are working at a location where bookmarks will not be preserved, you will need to remember where you stop and use the manual's Contents to return to that page.

Navigational links allow you to

  • move to the "next" web page,
  • move to the "previous" web page,
  • move to other areas of the manual through the links in Contents.

Unless otherwise indicated, always select "next" to continue the manual.
