Europeana (European Digital Library) - Europeana is a prototype digital library developed by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, for the European Digital Library project. Europeana offers approximately 12,000 copyright-free   documents from the BnF, the Széchényi National Library of Hungary, and the National Library of Portugal.

Assume all images, audio, & video are copyright protected unless the source specifically states otherwise. Copyrighted material may only be used (on your website; or published in another medium) with the permission of the owner

 Flickr -- There is a method of searching which makes it easier to discover items that you might be able to use without contacting the copyright owner. To find out whether an image may be used and for what purposes (without contacting the owner), use Advanced Search and check the box to "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content." Then, when you click on an image, look for a link to "Rights" information; for example, the link might be labeled "some rights reserved." Read the Creative Commons rights information for the image carefully to determine whether you can legally use that image in the way you want.

Google image search -- To help you find images that you might be able to legally use in the way you want without contacting the copyright owner, use Advanced Search and select the Usage Rights limit that you need.

Public Domain Images for Use in Multimedia Projects and Web Pages -- provides links to sites with public domain images.

Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) Archives -- a collection of radio and tv clips about themes and events that have affected Canadian life since the creation of radio in 1936 and television in 1952.

American Memory, Library of Congress - examples of the numerous online collections of the Library of Congress include Woody Guthrie and the Archive of the American Folksong, The Emergence of Advertising in America: 1850-1920, and History of the American West, 1860-1920: Photographs from the Collection of the Denver Public Library

Avalon Project at the Yale Law School -- digital documents relevant to the fields of history, economics, politics, diplomacy, and government. Conveniently arranged in categories from pre-18th Century documents to the 21st Century, here you can find the text of the "Laws of Kings" 753–510 B.C.E. from ancient Rome, the Magna Carta from 1215 C.E., or the latest executive order about the "attack on America."

Documenting the American South, U. of N. Carolina

ILEJ: Internet Library of Early Journals, Universities of Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and Oxford -- conducted under the auspices of the eLib (Electronic Libraries) Programme. It aims to digitize substantial runs of 18th and 19th century journals, and make these images available on the Internet. Titles include Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Gentleman's Magazine, The Annual Register, Notes and Queries, The Builder, and Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine.
