This gigantic project involved many departments of the United States government from the earliest resolution by the Committee on Rivers and Harbors of the House of Representatives approved June 13, 1902 with a view to preventing damage by floods on the main stream at and above Omaha up to the final dedication ceremonies for the dams and reservoirs. Senator Mundt was in office during the entire building project and this file is extraordinarily complete for the scholar.
The Missouri River flows 2440 miles generally east and south from its source in southwestern Montana through or along seven states and empties into the Mississippi River just above St. Louis, Missouri. About 60 per cent of the watershed is upstream from Sioux City, Iowa and the river bisects South Dakota from north to south in the center of the state.
