Sony Digital8 - Set up Windows Media Encoder & Transfer video to computer

To transfer video from a Sony Digital 8 camera to your computer you will need to download and install two software programs (Step A).  After these are installed follow the Transfer video instructions (Step B).

Follow the instructions below after you have installed the Sony USB Driver and Windows Media Encoder.

1. Connect the camcorder to your computer using a USB cable. You must do this before you start the Windows Media Encoder program.


2. Insert the small end of the cable into the camcorder.


3. The other end (larger end) goes into a USB port of your computer (back of M275s and side of M285s).


4. Once the camcorder is connected to your computer you may start “Windows Media Encoder. 

Select cam.wme on your desktop OR
Select the Start menu on your computer -->>All Programs -->>Windows Media -->>Windows Media Encoder
 

5. When you open Windows Media Encoder the New Session window appears, select “Cancel”


6. Select Properties in Windows Media Encoder
 Under the Audio


7. Sources select “Sony Digital Imaging Audio.”


8. Next select the “Output” tag.


9. Uncheck the “Pull from Encoder” box, and check the "Encode to File" or “Archive to file” box.

 

10. Click the “Browse” button and select where you would like your file to be saved, then click “Save.  All videos will use the file name you input here.  After each transfer, rename the file.


11. Select the “Compression” tag


12. Under Bit rates select the 548 kbps box, make sure it is the only one selected.


13. Select “Apply” and close the Properties window.

(Most times your computer will remember steps 1-13)

14. Turn camera on and Switch the camcorder to VCR.
15. Open Windows Media Encoder and Press “Start Encoding," and then press the Play button on the camcorder.
16. When the video is done Press the stop button in Windows Media Encoder and the Stop button on the camcorder from playing.
17. Rename the file after each video transfer!
18. Use Windows Movie Maker or another program to edit video.
