Player Piano was written by Kurt Vonnegut in 1952. This was his first novel. It is set in a futuristic United States where the advance of technology has supplanted the work of many individuals leaving them taken care of but with no true purpose. The main character Paul Proteus is one of the upper crust engineers of society. He struggles against the prevailing system in search of meaning in his life.
