HIM career opportunities continue
to grow. Nationally the
demand for health information managers exceed the number of qualified
professionals. A study of the
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that the market for HIM
professionals is expected to grow in numbers by approximately fifty
percent with over 47,000 new jobs by the year 2005. In addition, the
healthcare information specialist position has been listed in the Annual
Career Guide from U.S. News and World Report as one of the Best Jobs for
the Future. Health Information Management has
also been cited as one of the best career choices for women by three
national magazines, Working Women, U.S. News and World Reports, and
Essence.
As an HIM graduate of Dakota State

The opportunities for the health information
graduates may be expanded or reduced in scope depending on the size,
characteristics, and needs of the enterprise. They can be practiced in all
types of healthcare provider organizations. In addition, HIM professionals
are increasingly branching out into nontraditional healthcare settings. A
recent survey of the professional organization membership revealed that
jobs are found in managed care, home health, ambulatory care,
government/public health, single and multi-hospital systems, vendor,
corrections, insurance, hospice, law firm, educational, long term care,
and rehabilitation settings, as well as others.
