2008 Dakota State University Summer Financial Aid
and Work Study Information
Please review these items regarding Summer Financial Aid prior to applying for 2008 Summer Financial Aid. Summer applications are available on the
Financial Aid Forms page.
- File a 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
To be awarded Federal financial aid, we must receive valid FAFSA results from you before award consideration.
- Must be enrolled at least half time with the SD Board of Regents System.
Complete an application for summer financial aid if you plan on enrolling in at least 6 credit hours (5 credit hours for graduate students) throughout the entire summer term, are degree-seeking at DSU, and are seeking Federal financial aid to assist toward your educational costs over the summer. (In some cases, Federal Pell Grant may be awarded if enrollment is less than 6 credit hours.) Credits can be with any SD BOR university (BHSU, DSU, NSU, SDSU, SDSM&T, and USD).
- Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements
To be an eligible student for 2008 summer financial aid, you must meet the minimum standards of the Dakota State University Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy as of the end of the 2008 Spring semester. In addition, your progress will be evaluated for Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements upon completion of the 2008 Summer term if you enter the summer sessions on Financial Aid Probation.
- Off-campus enrollment
If you will enroll in credit hours with instruction that takes place other than on the DSU main campus (through either clinicals, internship, University Center or SD Board of Regent School Consortium) and you apply for loan funds; you are responsible to request the DSU Cashier to send any refunds to you. You should provide a correct address along with the request, remain eligible for the funds upon disbursement or otherwise pick up the disbursement at the Cashier's Office in Heston Hall following the first day of the term you are enrolled.
- Federal Stafford and PLUS Loan information
2008 Federal summer loan disbursements will reduce your 2008-2009 academic year remaining fund availability. For example, student with less than 32 completed credits has Stafford loan eligibility of $3,500 for the year, borrowed $875 during Summer 2008, remaining eligibility for 2008-2009 fall/spring is $2,625. Dates of Federal Stafford and PLUS loan disbursements will coincide with the summer sessions in which you are enrolled.
Summer Federal Work Study
- File a 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
To be awarded either full- or part-time employment in the form of Federal Work Study, we must receive valid FAFSA results from you before award consideration.
- May I work and be enrolled over the summer?
You may have both part-time Federal Work Study and Federal loan awarded to you as an eligible summer enrolled student (enrolled at least half-time throughout 2008 summer). To be eligible for part-time Federal Work Study you must be a summer school student and/or plan to be enrolling at DSU as at least a half-time student during the 2008 Fall semester. Or you may have full-time Federal Work Study during the 2008 Summer and still take a class if your supervisor approves it. However, you must enroll at least half-time (6 credits undergraduate, 5 credits graduate) at DSU during the 2008 Fall semester to have full-time summer work study.
- 2008 Fall semester at DSU enrollment is needed
If you are awarded and employed through Dakota State University Federal Work Study and you decide you will not enroll during the 2008 Fall semester at DSU, you are immediately not eligible for full- or part-time Federal Work Study and must stop working. Please notify the Financial Aid Office immediately.
2008 Summer Financial Aid Questions and Answers
Q. Is financial aid available for the Summer 2008 term while I attend Dakota State University?
A. Yes, however, it is limited. There are financial aid programs available for eligible students during the summer. Dakota State may assist eligible students who are seeking a degree or recognized educational credential through: Federal Stafford Loan, Federal Work Study, or unused 2007-2008 Federal Pell Grant.
Students not enrolled during the summer, and who will be a student during the 2008-2009 academic year may seek either full or part-time work study on campus during the 2008 summer term.
Q. How do I apply for a summer loan or a work study position?
A. You and your parents/spouse must complete a 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as your 2007 tax returns are completed. You will also need to complete the DSU summer financial aid and/or work study application. To be considered for any form of summer financial aid, this application must be returned to the Financial Aid Office before the start of the summer term.
Loan: Summer 2008 loan eligibility will be determined by your 2008-2009 FAFSA results and grade level. If you are awarded a Federal Stafford loan, you must accept the amount you want to borrow and return the summer award notification to the Financial Aid Office in order for your loan to be certified.
Q. Is there a deadline to apply for summer work study?
A. Yes, April 18, 2008. We hope to respond by April 30th to all students who submitted applications by April 18th.
