One of the most popular plays performed at Dakota State College was The Fantasticks. This theatrical production is considered one of the most popular American musical comedies and  is currently the longest running off-Broadway show in the nation. (21)

 

The first recorded local production of  The Fantasticks  was directed by James L. Johnson, December 9-11, 1965. Five plays were performed that year but The Fantasticks was the most popular of the productions. According to the Eastern, the Kennedy Center auditorium was filled to capacity and The Fantasticks was one of the best plays written and performed during that time period. Tickets were sold to the public at $1.25  per seat. Lead actors in the Dakota State College production  were Marci Scott, Dan Bohl, Dennis Bossman, and Ray Peterson. (22)

The show appeared at Dakota State1965 Fantasticks Performers -  Archives-Drama Box, 1965 Fantasticks folder. University again in 1985. This production was directed by DSU theatre director,  Paul Reahard and performed by the Old Operahouse Players, a theater group based in Dell Rapids, SD.  The lead actors were Mary Ruane, Tom Beck, Sue Falk, and Jerry Baustian. The musical  was performed September 19-21, with tickets selling at $4.00 per seat. (21)
