Dr. G. Donald MontgomeryDr. G. Donald Montgomery is a native of Alexandria, South Dakota. As a young man, he migrated to California where he graduated from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry in 1925. He practiced in the Los Angeles area nearly 50 years and established a reputation as a leader in restorative dentistry. Due to this fine reputation, Dr. Montgomery's patients included leading figures in business, industry, and entertainment. 10. As a philanthropist, Dr. Montgomery shared his success with many others. He established a Dean's Chair at USC School of Dentistry, provided a mobile clinic to serve low income families, and endowed numerous scholarships. Dr. Montgomery is the largest donor in the history of the USC School of Dentistry. (A Day of Dedication honoring Dr. G. Donald Montgomery) Before his death in 1999, Montgomery was the largest donor in the history of Dakota State University. His gifts to the University total over $1 Million. His donations provided funding for a project to solve the critical parking shortage donated in the memory if his son, a new reception area for enrollment services, new uniforms for the school band, and a peaceful outdoor plaza near the Trojan Center donated in the memory if his wife. In addition, the G. Donald and Marian James Montgomery Scholarship Endowment, one of DSU's largest endowments provides substantial scholarships to many needy students. Dr. Jerald Tunheim, Dakota State University's President at the time of the endowment said, "The importance of Dr. Montgomery's contributions goes well beyond monetary value alone. He has generously provided substantial sums at a critical moment in DSU's history. Those contributions have forever changed the Destiny of this University." In August of 1998, the DSU Alumni Association declared Dr. G. Donald
Montgomery to be an honorary alum. In October 1998, the Executive
Committee of the DSU Foundation declared October 24, 1998, to be "Dr. G.
Donald Montgomery day" on the DSU campus.
