Dakota State University was selected as one of the ten finalists for the 1987 G. Theodore Mitau Award. The Mitau Award is voted on by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the nation’s largest association of higher education institutes, for innovation and change.⁸⁸

In 1998 Dakota State University was ranked 12th on Yahoo Magazine’s list of the 100 most wired universities in the US and 10th on the list in 1999. DSU also made 9th on the Baccalaureate II list in 2000.⁸⁸

In August, a news release stated that Dakota State University is the best comprehensive public college in the Midwest according to U.S. News & World Report magazine's annual analysis of "America's Best College 2007".
