Volleyball
In 1926, Dakota State University started a Women's Athletes Association
(W.A.A.) program. W.A.A. was a program where all the women played a
variety of sports including volleyball. At this time, volleyball was
not considered a school affiliated team; the women only played for fun.
Back then, the Science Center was used as their gymnasium,
performing arts, and arena theater. The classes were held
downstairs, while sports were played upstairs. However, today, this
building is called the Technology Classroom Building (TCB).
It wasn't until 1966 that DSU officially had a Women's Volleyball team.
Their first and only two games were against Sioux Falls College in
December.16 The following year,
there were a numerous amount of women interested in volleyball, so it was
divided into Teams A and B.
14 From then
on, the women have been improving their skills to become a better team.
In 1991, the DSU Volleyball team began their season with their new
coach, Cindy Pummill. With the help of Coach Pummill, the Trojan
Volleyball team shared the Conference Champions title with the South
Dakota School of Mines and Technology Hard Rockers, each with a record of
8-2. Dakota State also captured the Sub-District Championship
Banner, and also participated in the District 12 tournament, finishing
with 3rd place. They ended their season with the most wins in Dakota
State University Volleyball history!

The Trojan Volleyball team is continuing to break records. In
2001, They top the list for the most kills in a match, most team aces in a
match, and most digs in a match. Although they finished with a 12-14
season, the matches were close, going to five games several times.

With five return starter from last season and the newest additions to
the DSU Volleyball team, Coach Cindy Henning believes they have a solid
foundation in 2003. They have continued to make the playoffs every
year, and plan to continue to build their standings in the DAC 10
Conference.
