Intramurals
Men's Intramurals
I intramural
athletics for men was started in 1926-27 with the intention of getting
more men interested in sports. Too many of the men would rather sit
in the stands, while a select few were doing all the work.
At one point every man at DSU was involved
in one of the four intramural teams. At different times of the year,
tournaments are played in basketball, quoits, tennis, volleyball, and a
track meet is held. Both individuals and teams are awarded trophies
and medals at the end of the year. There has been rivalry between
teams for the school championship, which helps keep men in good condition
and interested in sports.9
Around 1967, Intramural sports for men soon
became an important part in the college life; they kept the men occupied.
The most popular sport among men is basketball; next would be pass
football and the slow pitch round robin tournament.14
Women's Intramurals
Intramural
competition for women is managed by the Women's Athletic Association.
Every girl is required to take physical training, and is urged to
participate in as many sports as possible. Some major activities are
tennis, tumbling, volleyball, dancing, hockey, baseball, and basketball.15
In 1966, the women's intramural volleyball team was coached by Miss
Erickson, unlike today where most intramural teams do not have designated
coaches.16
Intramurals Today
The Intramural Sports program is run by
Jeff Ditman, and has sparked the interest of many DSU students. Some
of the intramural sports offered in 2001 are the 200 mile club, broomball,
snow softball, mud volleyball, and weightlifting. The most popular
events include bowling, table tennis, basketball, flag football,
volleyball, and tennis. There are also numerous contests and
tournaments hosted to help the competitiveness and interest in intramural
sports. Some of these might be basketball, billiards, hot shot
contest, mud volleyball tournaments, three-point shoot-out, bowling
tournaments, and road races. Some of these sports like basketball
and volleyball are divided into men's, women's, and coed teams. The
champions of each event are given T-shirts, which often recruit others to
become involved in intramural sports.20
Intramural
Sports are a great idea for many different individuals. Some like to
participate because college sports aren't for them, yet they miss high
school sports. Others may like something to be involved in and just
want to have fun. Either way, the fun will always be there to
satisfy everyone!
