Football

Dakota State University had their first football team in
1908. It was not called Dakota State University then; it was
called Madison Normal School. At this time the team was made up of
only fourteens players. The head coach was Charles C. Wagner. The very
first game they played the Flandreau Indians.22 Throughout the season they
only played six games and were fortunate enough to lose only one!
Between 1920 and 1945, there
was a lack of men
due to enrollment in the army, so no games were played. The team started
up again in 1946. The program continued its winning streak it previously
held. The team played several successful games between 1946 through 1971.
In fact, they were so successful that they were the first team to win a
bowl game.23 Head coach Lee Moran played a major role in winning this game.
During 1977, the head coach was Gary Buer. Once again, the
Trojans had another very successful year; they remained undefeated in the
SDIC champions. That was a perfect record for Dakota State University with
a record of 10-0. 24
Since
then the Trojans have struggled, but with the help of head coach Gene Wockenfuss, they have been striving to regain
the Trojan's successful history.
