Getting Started with English 101:  BEGINS 18 MAY 2009

Hi, Writers:

The syllabus is under construction, but here's some information to get you started:

PACING AND WORKLOAD

Be prepared to write every day, and to write and read much between 18 May and 26 June.  We are basically compressing 16 weeks of work into six weeks, so if the pace doesn't match your schedule, consider taking this class at another time.  Pay attention to the drop and withdraw deadlines, too.

COMMUNICATION

The fast pace of the course makes frequent contact with the course and the teacher extra important.  We will use D2L, university Webmail, and Facebook as ways to communicate.  So that we have the option of convenient chat for real-time help, please add me (Casualene Meyer) as a friend on Facebook.  Of course you can remove me as soon as the class is done and your grade is posted!

*note:  If you use a screen reader, please let me know.

BLOGGING

If you want to get started with something ahead of time, here's an easy assignment.  If you already blog, send me your URL (blog address) in an e-mail as soon as possible.  If you don't blog, set up an account at www.blogspot.com and e-mail me your URL as soon as possible.  We'll be blogging every day M-F and you'll want to be ready.  NOTE:  If you object to blogging for philosophical or privacy reasons, let me know and we'll have create an alternative way to fulfill the blogging requirement.

TEXTS

Our books are

1.      Axelrod & Cooper's Concise Guide to Writing 4th ed.

2.      Prentice Hall Reference Guide 6th ed.--DSU CUSTOMIZED VERSION

(If you will be taking other writing classes through DSU, be sure to get this version; otherwise, any used copy of the 6th edition should work.)

See your textbooks as resources and references throughout the course, and take the initiative to use them on your own to answer questions and strengthen your writing...get your money's worth!

Thanks for reading to the end.  I look forward to working with you starting on Monday the 18th.

Regards,

C. Meyer
