Application Programming (AS)
This program focuses on the integration of Computing and Information Sciences and
business including computer operating systems, on-line applications, systems analysis,
computer programming, computer networking, accounting and management.
Graduates will:
- have been taught principles of problem definition, logical design, and structured
programming.
- have been taught commonly used programming languages, such as Visual Basic, and
COBOL and how to work in an online environment with databases.
- have a background in business and accounting.
Jobs & Degrees
Customer Service Representative: Responds to customer inquires regarding
orders, billing inquiries and technical problem notifications. Documents customer
trouble reports in trouble ticketing system and escalates according to established
standard operating procedures. Also reviews requests, contacts customers to clarify
request, ensuring all necessary information is included and may route requests to
the appropriate department.
Help Desk Expert: Provides support to end users on a variety of issues. Identifies,
researches, and resolves technical problems. Responds to telephone calls, email
and personnel requests for technical support. Tracks and monitors the problem to
insure a timely resolution.
Programmer/Analyst: Reviews, analyzes, and modifies programming systems including
encoding, testing, debugging and installing for a large-scale mainframe computer
system. Maintains and develops on-line and batch application programs. Develops
and implements a disaster recovery plan.
Manager PC Support: Directs, establishes, plans and implements the policies
and procedures to support the organization's PC support services. Manages the deployment,
maintenance, support and upgrade of servers, desktop PC, hardware, software, operating
systems and distributed printers.
Associate of Science in Application Programming
Graduates of the Application Programming program are prepared to step directly into
positions as business application programmers with both large and small companies.
Students are taught principles of problem definition, logical design, and structured
programming; they learn techniques of writing and maintaining programs. Students
are taught commonly-used programming languages (C, COBOL, etc.), how to work in
an on-line environment with data bases, and how to read and interpret processor
dumps. In addition, each student will have a sound background in business and accounting.
Graduates of this program will be able to pursue the four-year degree in computer
information systems or management information systems.
