Professional Accountancy (BS)
This program is accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The program blends solid computer orientation with traditional business. In addition to accounting courses, subjects include finance, management, marketing, production and management operations, business law, computer applications, and computer programming. Graduates will be able to sit for the certified public accountant (CPA) exam upon completion.
Graduates will:
- understand business topics of accounting, and accounting systems, finance, economics, management, marketing and production integrated with computer skills.
- understand income tax theory and practice for individuals, corporations and partnerships using manual and computerized methods.
- understand basic financial and accounting principles for non-for-profit entities
- understand the design and operation of accounting information systems and auditing practices.
- understand computer programming concepts including Visual BASIC.
- understand the legal and ethical operations of a business entity.
Jobs & Degrees
Certified Public Accountant: Top company seeking an individual who can review, and verify trial balances to income tax accounting. Prepare paperwork related to fiscal year end tax return. Prepare sale, property and payroll state apportionment workpapers and semiannual NML reporting package.
Auditor: Audit loan files for accuracy and completion. Problems are identified
and input in the computer tracking system. Follow audit checklists for all closing
documents along with select compliance and credit information. Daily reports are
reviewed for deadlines and requirements.
Tax Accountant: Prepare assigned corporate tax returns, estimated tax payments
and internal tax calculations. Perform various analyses and assist in gathering
data for compliance and audit purposes. The above items relate to the non-income
tax area with an emphasis on sales & use returns. Maintain an up-to-date knowledge
of technical developments in the tax area.
Cost Accountant: Responsible for the preparation and analysis of cost reports
and costing audits. May require a bachelor's degree and 0-3 years of experience
in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices,
and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established
guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision.
Little creativity is required. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
Financial Analyst: Responsible for conducting financial analysis projects
and statistical studies. Requires a bachelor's degree and 0-3 years of experience
in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices,
and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established
guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision.
Little creativity is required. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
Internal Auditor: Audits the accounting and financial data of various departments
within an organization. Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting and 0-3 years
of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used
concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions
and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under
immediate supervision. Little creativity is required. Typically reports to a supervisor
or manager.
Payroll Administrator: Maintains production records, timesheets, and payroll
system. May be responsible for computing withholding and deductions associated with
net earnings. May require an associate's degree or its equivalent. Typically reports
to a payroll manager.

The Bachelor of Science in Professional Accountancy is accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).
This program is designed for students who wish to pursue a career as a certified public accountant (CPA). South Dakota (as do most other states) requires that candidates for the CPA examinations have an accounting degree and 150 semester hours of college credit.
