It took going into extra play
here Monday, but Dakota State University earned a 3-1
non-conference women's volleyball win over Dakota Wesleyan
University at the DSU Fieldhouse.
The Trojans (6-23) took the Lady Tigers into overtime in the
fourth game of the match and defeated DWU 34-32. Dakota State
had won the first two games 30-24 and 30-14 before DWU played
solid volleyball in the third game, coming away with a 14-point,
30-16, victory.
With the help of Krista Klemm and her 52-assist night, the
Trojans mounted a fairly balanced attack, getting double-figure
kills performances from hitters Margie Anthony, Rachael Jensen,
Jenna Kostelecky and Ashley Schulte.
Anthony, Jensen and Kostelecky all came through with 13-kill
matches, while Schultz was close behind with 10 kills. Anthony
also had a pair of block assists, and Klemm, Jensen, Kostelecky
and Schulte each had assisted stops.
On the serve line, Dakota State had 89-percent serving, led by
Kostelecky and her 24-for-25 performance. She produced a pair of
ace serves. Laura Lanoue also had three ace serves and Jensen
had another two ace serves. Lanoue, Jensen, Klemm, Amy Pheneger
and Kostelecky powered DSU's defense.
Lanoue led the way with 25
digs. She was followed closely by Jensen with 22 digs and Klemm
added 21. Pheneger and Kostelecky had twin 14-dig outings. On
the other side of the net, Dakota Wesleyan's hitting was sparked
by Maria Wienecke, who had 19 kills. Madison native Kalie Whealy
added 11 kills and Jen Miner had ten.
Morgan Carlson and Beth Kopfmann shouldered DWU's second-row
play, earning respectively, 17 and 16 assists. Beth Kopfmann led
the Lady Tigers' serving, going 18-20 and Wienecke went 18-21.
Dana Kopfmann had three ace serves and Wienecke two.
Dana Kopfmann also had a game-tops 28 digs, followed by Carlson
with 14 digs and Wienecke a dozen. Dakota State closes out its
regular season with a pair of Dakota Athletic Conference matches
this Friday and Saturday against, respectively, Valley City
State and Mayville State universities.
