(Madison, SD) -
It took Jamestown College
just three games to defeat Dakota State University in Dakota
Athletic Conference volleyball action Wednesday at the DSU
Fieldhouse.
The opener for her Trojans just shouldn't have turned out that
way, according to Coach Cynthia Henning.
"We just didn't play very well against Jamestown," said Henning.
"They definitely have a good team. But, we match up well against
them. We have everything they have -- size, physical abilities
and the like. The point is we just didn't compete with them last
night."
Jamestown ran its record to 8-1 by bumping winless DSU (0-5)
30-24, 30-16 and 30-18.
"We waited for Jamestown to act first on Wednesday," added
Henning.
Jamestown came away with a 96-percent serving night, which
dictated much of Wednesday's play. Lindsey Meyers, who went
21-22, had three ace serves, and Lauren Wieler was 14-15 with
three more aces.
On the other end of the court, DSU had just 78-percent serving,
including three ace serves. Rachel Jensen had two of those aces,
and Kelsey Paulson had the other one.
Jamestown also kept the Trojans off balance by digging the ball
64 times to DSU's 49 volley-savers. Wieler produced a match-high
16 digs for Jamestown, which got 15 digs from Meyers and 13 from
Ali Edwards.
Laura Lanoue managed to collect 13 of DSU's 49 digs. At the net,
Jensen garnered a match-tops 16 kills and teammate Jenna
Kostelecky added 10 as the Trojans came up with 38 kills.
For Jamestown, Megan Dooley earned 11 of her team's 34 kills.
Henning and her staff have only one practice day to get the
Trojans ready for four matches in the University of Sioux Falls
Tournament at the Stewart Center.
DSU begins play there Friday with respective 2:30 and 8:30 p.m.
matches against host-school USF and Valley City State
University.
On Saturday, the Trojans play Dana and Mount Marty colleges at
11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
"We are going to be working on our passing, making our offense
better," promised Henning. "We're also going to work on our
defensive aggressiveness, and that means going after the ball."
