(Madison, SD) –
Dakota State University forged a season-opening two-match
win string, only to have the University of Sioux Falls end
it in the final game of the USF Classic Monday at the
Stewart Center in Sioux Falls.
Sioux Falls outlasted the Trojans 3-1.
The Trojans had posted a 3-0 whitewash of Mount Marty
College on Friday in Yankton.
DSU added a 3-1 victory over Grand View College in its first match in
the USF Classic.
AT SIOUX FALLS
Sioux Falls 3, DSU 1
Sioux Falls started off with a 30-26 first-game win. DSU
came right back with a 30-28 win of its own in the second
game. The Lady Cougars then closed out the match with 30-16
and 30-27 wins.
DSU got 14 kills by Stacy Dunklau, 34 assists from Katie
Bassett and 17 digs by Laura Lanoue.
For USF, Jamie Gerdes got 16 kills, Tara Gacke 25 assists
and Krystal Den Boer 21 digs.
DSU 3, Grand View 1
Dunklau's 17 assists, Bassett's 35 assists and Amanda
Kaufmann's 14 digs helped the Trojans come back and defeat
Grand View.
Grand View opened the match with a 30-25 win, but DSU
rallied for three straight game wins -- 30-24, 30-26 and
30-25 -- to nail down the match win.
Grand View got 16 kills and 24 digs by Katie Demarest and 35 assists
from Kayla Brooks.
AT YANKTON
DSU 3, Mt. Marty 0
The play of Dunklau, Kaufmann and Bassett helped the Trojans open their
season with a 3-0 victory Friday.
Against Mt. Marty, Dunklau came through with 14 kills and
Kaufmann added 10 kills. Bassett had a stellar 41-assist
night for the Trojans.
TROJANS TRAVEL TO NEBRASKA
The Trojans will be playing four matches at Bellevue, Neb.,
on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, DSU takes on Avila (Mo,) College at 1 p.m.,
followed by a 5 p.m. match against Peru (Neb.) State.
Saturday's action finds the Trojans playing host-team
Bellevue at 11 a.m., and then Doane College at 3 p.m.
