Tolzin & Brassfield named DAC Players of the Week


Tolzin named as DAC Player of the Week while breaking her career kills at Dakota State

(November 8, 2005)  Micah Tolzin, senior from Sioux Falls, SD, was named DAC Volleyball Player of the Week.  Tolzin helped lead the Trojans to a 2-0 outing for the week including a win over NCAA Division II University of Mary.  In two matches, she hit .368 with 31 kills (4.43 kpg), 13 blocks (1.86 bpg), 11 digs (1.57 dpg), and one service ace (0.14 apg).  Tolzin broke her career kills versus Valley City State and currently has 1439 career kills.

Tolzin is leading the team and is third in the conference for kills and blocks per game with 3.67 kills per game and 1.29 blocks per game, respectively.  For the season, she had a total of 374 kills and 92.5 blocks.  Tolzin is a two time All-Conference and All-Region honors.  Tolzin is the daughter of Suzie Tolzin and Mike and Lori Tolzin and is majoring in elementary education/special education.

Ashley Brassfield, senior from New Underwood, SD, was selected as DAC Libero Player of the Week for the sixth time this season.  Brassfield had 61 digs (8.71 dpg) for the week in helping lead the Trojans to a 2-0 record including a win over NCAA Division II University of Mary.  Brassfield passed at 94% for the week along with garnering one service ace (0.14 apg).

For the season, Brassfield had received NAIA Region III Libero Player of the Week honors twice.  She has recorded 668 digs this season with an average of 6.6 digs per game which leads the DAC.She  has a serving percentage of 94% with 0.3 aces per game.   Currently in the Trojans’ record book, Brassfield is second in career digs of 1763 digs.  Brassfield is the daughter of Dale and Trudy Brassfield of New Underwood, SD and is majoring in Computer Graphics.

"Micah and Ashley are both very pivotal players in our program. Throughout their careers they have both shown great improvement and both have a great competitive fire. The awards they have received have been well deserved," said Cynthia Henning, Dakota State University Volleyball Coach.

The
Trojans (14-13, 9-5 DAC) are entering the DAC Postseason Quarterfinals and earned a #3 seed in the tournament.  The Trojans will be hosting #6 seed Black Hills State Tuesday night (7:00 pm) with the winner advancing to DAC Semifinals with #2 seed Minot State Friday night in Dickinson, ND (6:00 pm CT/5:00 pm MT).
