Trojan Women Split 1-1 on Mt. Marty's Volleyball Court

(Madison, SD) - Dakota State University's women kept themselves from an early-season slide Saturday, producing a 3-2 volleyball win over Waldorf (Iowa) College in Yankton.

Earlier, the Trojans suffered a 3-2 decision to host-team Mt. Marty College in the Lady Lancers' triangular.

DSU 3, Waldorf 2

DSU and Waldorf took a 2-2 match record into the fifth and deciding match, which DSU won by a slim 15-13 margin.

The Trojans opened up the duel with a 25-22 win, but fell 21-25 in the second match.  They went ahead 2-1 on a 25-14 third-match win before Waldorf rebounded with a 25-20 fourth-match victory.

Stephanie Kruggel, Ashley Schulte and Rachael Jensen powered the Trojans' attack with respective 13-, 11- and 10-kill matches.

Helping set up those kills was Melissa Boddy, who garnered 24 assists.

Laura Lanoue kept Waldorf from scoring any more points by grinding out 34 digs.

In serving, Amy Pheneger, Lanoue, Boddy, Vcki Kaul, Margie Anthony and Jensen each had an ace serve.

Waldorf had only one player; Chelsey Dougherty, in double figures in kills with 16.

Sara Baker added 31 assists.  Andrea Blanchard was the leading defender with 21 digs.  Ashleigh Betha had both of Waldorf's ace serves.

Mt. Marty 3, DSU 2

Mt. Marty opened up play Saturday with a 2-1 match lead over DSU, winning the first and third matches by respective 25-21, 25-22 scores.

Between those decisions was a 25-23 second-match win by DSU, which also won the fourth match 25-20 before losing the duel in the fifth match 15-8.

In this duel, Lanoue had a stellar 45 digs, which was complemented by Jensen's 20 digs and Kruggel's 10.

Kruggel also produced 13 team-leading kills, which was supported by Schulte, who banged across 10 kills.

Boddy also produced 17 set assists and Kruggel added 13.

Anthony added three ace serves and Kruggel had two.

Mt. Marty's attack was sparked by Krista Hohn, who had nine kills.  Krystal Cihak added eight kills and Lindsay Beacom had seven.  Abby Haiar garnered 35 assists, while Kate Carda added two ace serves. 

On defense, Mt. Marty got double-dight displays by Kristi Waller, Carly Benson, Haiar, Cihak and Anne Hansen, who had respectively 31, 19, 16, 14 and 11 digs.

DSU will take its 1-1 duel record up against University of Sioux Falls on Wednesday at the DSU Field House.
