Tewes tabbed 3rd in High Jump at NAIA National Outdoor Track & Field Championships; Tewes earned All-American Honor May 30, 2006
(Madison, SD) - Dakota State University's Laura Tewes
Tewes, sophomore from Mayer, MN, participated in the women's high jump on May 27th. A total of 21 jumpers participated in this event. Coming into this event, Tewes ranked as the third best jumper on the final national performance list. "We knew that if she could make three bars at the national meet, she would stand a great chance of becoming All-American," said Women's Track & Field Head Coach Bart Gray. She cleared the opening height of 5'3.25" on her first attempt. She cleared the second height (5'5.25") on her first attempt and cleared the third height (5'7.25") on her third attempt. The fourth height was 5'9.25" (which would had been a new personal best for Tewes). "She had two good attempts at this height (5'9.25") but could not clear it on her third attempt," explained Gray. "I think Laura was very pleased with her performance." Tewes placed third in the women's high jump with a jump of 5'7.25" and had already tied DSU school record in high jump this year. After finishing third in the nation, Tewes earned All-American honor. "If you know her, you know that she doesn't say a lot, but the look on her face conveyed that the fact that she was very happy with earning All-American status," stated Gray. "It was a great ending to a very successful outdoor season for Laura which also included wins at the DAC Conference meet and Howard Wood Relays." Laura is the daughter of Doug and Sally Tewes of Mayer, MN.
