Jane
Nielsen Memorial Endowed
Scholarship |
|

|
|
Jane
Nielsen was the mother of Erin Nielsen who played for the Lady
T's women's basketball team from 1999-2003. Throughout Erin's
first two seasons as a Lady T, Jane only missed 3 games out of
nearly 70 contests. Jane was a mom to the Lady T’s players
whose parents couldn't make it to games. She was a positive person
who cared about the student athletes. For these reasons and many
more, Jane was named as the Lady T's "Most Valuable Mom!"
During
Erin's junior season, Jane suffered health complications that
prevented her from attending many of Erin's games. Her health
continued to decline and Jane passed away at the end of Erin’s
senior year.
This
endowment has been created in Jane's memory for a Lady T who
exemplifies a similar level of commitment, determination, and pride
to the team as she once did. The family of Jane Nielsen asks
that this scholarship be awarded to a second year athlete, who is in
good academic standing and exemplifies a high level
of commitment, determination and pride to the team based on
first year experiences. The
recipient of this scholarship must also show need for financial assistance, if possible, coming from a
single parent family.

Lynn
and Terry Ryan Endowed Scholarship |
|

|
|
This endowment was established in October 2003 by Lynn and Terry
Ryan to assist in the recruitment of quality student-athletes to the
women’s basketball program. Terry and Lynn began work at DSU in
1975. Prior to coming to DSU, Terry completed his undergraduate
degree in Engineering at Purdue University and his Master’s Degree
in Student Services from Indiana University. Terry left Indiana
without catching the basketball bug. But, after running the shot
clock for years at DSU home games, we are proud to say he is now a
full-fledged basketball fan. Terry retired from DSU in December 2003
after 28 years of leadership as the Dean of Students.
Lynn completed her
undergraduate degree at Spaulding College in Louisville, KY, then
received her Master’s Degree in French from Indiana University.
The combination of growing up in Kentucky and attending Indiana
University led to her love of basketball, in particular Kentucky
Wildcat basketball. Lynn has been a member of the English
faculty throughout her tenure and spent the majority of her time as
the International advisor.
Terry and Lynn have a
daughter, Colleen, who completed her undergraduate degree at
Bellarmine University in Kentucky and also has a love for Kentucky
hoops.
Terry and Lynn have donated this endowment with the belief that
successful student-athletes must learn skills that will last them a
lifetime. These skills include hard work, teamwork,
sportsmanship and the ability to demonstrate class in winning and
losing. Terry and Lynn chose to donate this endowment to the
women’s basketball program based on its history of producing
successful scholars, leaders, and athletes.
This scholarship is awarded to a new
or continuing women’s basketball student-athlete with a GPA
of 3.00 or higher. This
student-athlete must
have a significant involvement or leadership role in student
activities. Roles may include Resident Assistant, Student
Assistants, or be an officer of a campus organization.

| The Class of
1997 Endowed Scholarship |
|

|
| The
Class of 1997 Women’s Basketball Scholarship Endowment was established
by DSU Lady T’s members Danielle Nolte and Michelle Butash-Daniels.
The scholarship is designed to assist in the recruitment of quality
women basketball players to the Lady T’s basketball program.
Danielle
and Michelle were the first recruiting class for Coach Jeff Dittman.
Prior to their arrival, the women’s basketball team compiled a
4-24 season record. In the next four years, Danielle and
Michelle would help rebuild the Lady T’s basketball program.
In their senior year, Dakota State would record an 18-10 record and
a third place finish in an extremely competitive South Dakota
Intercollegiate Conference. This would be the first of many
nationally-recognized teams for the Dakota State women's basketball
program.
Danielle Nolte was a
Brandon High School graduate, majoring in Information Systems.
An outstanding student, Danielle was twice named NAIA Academic
All-American. A 5’10” forward, she was also an
All-Conference selection while finishing 8th in career points with
976 points. She also left career marks in rebounding with 545
rebounds
(7th), steals (131 – 9th), blocked shots (33 – 6th),
and 7th in field goals. Danielle shot 48.8% from the field, ranking
her 6th in career field goal percentage, and 66.7% from the
free-throw line, 5th in career free-throw percentage. Danielle is
employed as a systems analyst for Mutual of Omaha.
Michelle Butash-Daniels
graduated from Berkley High School in Michigan. She was a
scholarship athlete in basketball and track while attending DSU and
distinguished herself in both. At 5’4”, Michelle was an
extremely quick point guard who could break down any team’s press
while also causing havoc on the defensive end. Michelle
finished her career with 226 steals, ranking her 2nd all-time for
DSU. She also knocked down 36 three-point shots, good for 9th
all-time. Michelle was named MVP of the Grinnell College
Tournament her senior year, helping the Lady T’s to the tournament
championship. She was also named MVP of the SDIC Conference
track meet twice, finishing in the top five in eleven different
track and field events. Michelle also qualified for the NAIA
National Meet her junior and senior seasons. Michelle
graduated with an Exercise Science major and is employed by the
Oakland Athletic Club in Birmingham, Michigan.
