Omar
Appelwick Memorial Endowed
Scholarship
The
Omar Appelwick scholarship was instituted to benefit three outstanding
athletic scholars attending Dakota State each year. Mr. Appelwick was a
lifetime resident and businessman in the community of Madison. As a
youth he was an outstanding athlete at Madison Central High School and
Augustana College, where he was an early inductee into that school’s
“Athletic Hall of Fame.” This honor was bestowed because of his
prowess and achievements in basketball and football, gaining
All-Conference recognition numerous times in both sports. Following his
graduation from Augustana, Omar coached one year at Jefferson, South
Dakota, moving to Madison the following year where he coached basketball
at the St. Thomas High School for nine years until its closing in 1945.
