Alvin Ashley has been named as Assistant Football
Coach/Defensive Coordinator and Strength/Conditioning coach. He is
a native of Fort Meyers, Florida, where he attended Mariner High School.
Following high school, he played football and basketball at Southwest
Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota, where he became one
of the most successful wide receivers in school history. During
his four-year career (1990-1993) at SMSU, Ashley set nearly every school
record for receiving, return yards and total offense and was twice named
as a NAIA First-Team All-American. His name is still all over the
SMSU record book as he currently holds 34 different school records in
almost every receiving, returning and total offense category. As a
freshman (1990), he helped the Mustangs win their first ever Northern
Intercollegiate Conference Championship and to reach the first round of
the NAIA playoffs, just their second appearance in school history.
Although SMSU lost to powerhouse Carson-Newman College, Ashley was the
game's top receiver, leading both teams with 12 catches for 171 yards.
After college, Ashley was drafted by the Milwaukee Mustangs of the Arena
Football League, sparking an eleven-year playing career in the AFL.
He played for Milwaukee, Albany, Miami, Minnesota, New Jersey, Tampa,
Carolina, and Grand Rapids and holds several distinguished milestones.
He was the sixth player in AFL history to record 15,000 all-purpose
yards; he is one of only five players in the AFL to log both 5,000
career receiving yards and 5,000 return yards. He is one of only
seven AFL players to have both 10,000 career all-purpose yards and 500
receptions. Ashley was named the Second Team All-Arena in 1997,
was selected to the First Team All-Arena in 1998 and to the 1998
All-Ironman Team. Ashley had 629 catches for 7,561 yards and 142
touchdowns in the AFL career, along with 16 rushing attempts for 50
years and one touchdown. On the other side of the ball, he had 185
career solo tackles as a defensive back, with 41 assists, 29 pass
blocks, 16 interceptions with 185 INT yards and one interception return
for a touchdown. Ashley accumulated 438 returns in his AFL career,
totaling 7,604 yards and six touchdowns.
Alvin and his wife Stephanie lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
They have one daughter, Shaunteva (16) and one son Taylen (4).
