Trojans hold off Dickinson State, give Shea 100th win

(Madison, SD) -- Mitch Lynch's kicking for Dakota State University proved to make the difference between DSU Coach Tom Shea winning the 100th game of his career and suffering another loss.

Lynch's two PAT successes after touchdowns by Andrew Fatten and Donald Strand gave DSU (1-1) a 14-12 win over Dickinson State on Saturday at Trojan Field. "Any time you get a win, it's good," said Shea. "But we still have a lot of things we need to work on to become a better ballclub." This is Shea's first year of his second tour as the Trojans' head coach.

He has also been a head coach and earned wins at the University of Mary (Bismarck, N.D.), Peru (Neb.) and William Penn at Iowa in his 16-year career. While Lynch was producing the Trojans' game-winning points, Shawn O'Brien, Dickinson's place kicker, had the opposite kind of day. O'Brien's miss of a 17-yard field goal at the 1:08 mark of the fourth quarter ended a less-than-stellar day for the Dickinson kicker. He also missed a PAT kick after DSU quarterback Caleb Midura hit Clint Grosz for a 32-yard touchdown strike, which put the Blue Hawks (0-3) on top 6-0 in the first quarter.

DSU got both of its touchdowns in the second quarter, putting the Trojans on top 14-6 at halftime. Fatten scored on a 6-yard scoring burst at the 9:17 mark of the period, and Strand carried the pigskin into Trojan Field's west end zone a little over eight minutes later. "When we got into the `red zone' (20 yards or less from the end zone), we scored Saturday," said an encouraged Shea. "We didn't do that at Hastings, Neb., two weeks ago when we lost 13-9. But, we have to work on attacking the entire field, getting our perimeter running game going and improving our passing."

Shea was glad to get 64 yards rushing from Strand and his 96 yards passing. Shea considered it fortunate that Dickinson got just six points in the second half when James Macey scored for the Blue Hawks on a 1-yard scoring dive.

"We stopped Dickinson when we had to," said Shea. "We gave up too much to them in the second half, when they got more of their 159 passing yards. They moved the ball well against us in the second half." Shea was pleased to get 15 tackles, including eight solos from Logan Denning and 11 tackles from Noah Sanderson, who had six solo stops.

"I think that Trevor Cucinello played well in the secondary," added Shea. "He was right there with Dickinson's receivers most of the time." Midura was limited to 6-11 passing for 126 yards, including four passed to Derek Pauley for 103 yards. Macey added 72 yards rushing.

On defense, Dickinson was led by Lico Suentes, who had 12 tackles, Mike Keyser and Karter Kleeman each had nine stops. "I think our guys now know they can play with some of the contenders in the DAC," concluded Shea. "Our guys are working hard, and I think they will have a great week of practice."

DSU visits Valley City (N.D.) State (0-2) this Saturday.
