State University snapped a 15-game losing streak string with an 97-86
win over Black Hills State Friday at the DSU Field House. It had
been a long time since the Trojans' season-opening win over Dana College
on | On Saturday, the Trojans battled S.D. Tech on fairly-even teams until losing an 89-80 decision to the Hardrockers. Trojans 97, BHSU 86 A 20-4 Trojans' scoring run midway into the first half erased a 13-4 game-opening surge by Black Hills State. DSU earned a 24-17 lead with 9:22 left in the first half and built that lead to 47-33 at halftime.
DSU led Black Hills State by
as much as 24 points in the early stages of the second half before
eventually setting for the Frank Calles led five Trojans into double figures with 20 points. Calles also had six team-leading assists. Joe Backus added 15 points and Adam Nielson, Bryce Kreutzfeldt and Jordan Hughes each had 11 points as DSU outgunned Black Hills State 32-25 in field goals made. The Yellow Jackets got 21 tilt-tops points by Forrest Dorr. Dan Russell scored 14 points, Randy Newman 13 and A.J. Fodness 12. DSU also produced a 45-34 rebound edge over BHSU with Andy Hansen claiming nine rebounds, Backus eight and Brett Gardner six. S.D. Tech 89, Trojans 80 DSU (2-16 overall, 1-4 in DAC) tied Tech six times in Saturday's contest before the Hardorockers slowly pulled away from the Trojans in the last six minutes. Tech had a razor-thin 41-40 lead over the Trojans at halftime. Kreutzfeldt came through a game-high 25 points, going 7-13 from the field, which included four 3-pointers. Backus and Calles contributed twin 14-point games, and Hughes had nine. DSU shot a shade under 50 percent, 23-48, in field goal shooting and was 22-30 at the charity stripe. For Tech, Brandon Fredrickson notched 24 points, which was supported by Casey Schmitz, Andrew Brown and Brandon Smith and their respective 14-, 12- and 10-point outings. The Hardrockers' shooting statistics included 29-52 from the field and 26-32 at the free throw line.
DSU had a slim 28-27 rebound
edge over Tech with Backus claiming 13 rebounds. |
