(Madison, SD) -  Dakota State University's Trojans played some their best basketball of the season against Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) and Wayne State College on Friday and Saturday.  Unfortunately for the Trojans, those moments came in the final 30 minutes of each of the Hardee's Classic games in Marshall, MN, and DSU lost 75-61 to SMSU and 74-71 to Wayne State.

"I thought we played extremely well in stretches," said DSU Coach Wade Kooiman.  "But we played sloppily in the first 10 minutes of each of those games, digging ourselves 23- and 13- point holes."

"Both Southwest and Wayne State are NCAA Division II schools and are in the upper division of the NSIC.  We cut Southwest's lead down to four points with 5 minutes left in that game, and Wayne State's lead to one point with a minute left."

Joe Backus and Frank Calles shouldered the scoring load for the Trojans on Friday with 23 and 22 points, respectively.  Backus and Calles combined for 15-for-30 field goal shooting.

Jordan Hughes added eight more Trojan points.  SMSU enjoyed a 36-23 halftime lead.

The Trojans sliced the Mustangs' lead to 59-55 with just 5:07 left, but SMSU went on an 11-0 scoring run to seal the win.

SMSU's balanced-scoring offense was led by Travis Krenske and Nick Dale, who had 16 and 10 pints, respectively, as the Mustangs outgunned DSU 26-17 in made field goals.  Adam Nielson had nine of the Trojans' 38 rebounds and Backus added seven.

In addition to Caldwell, Wayne State got 16 points from David Walters and 10 from Jamarr Diggs.
