Dakota State
University scraped together a 105-98 overtime win against the University
of Minnesota-Morris on Friday.
"We played pretty well for most of the game and extended the lead to 12
points with 2:30 left in regulation," said DSU Coach Wade Kooiman. "At
that point, we relaxed and UMM came back and forced overtime. I was very
disappointed that we just let UMM back into the game that easily, but in
the overtime period, we outscored them 21-14."
The Trojans used that momentum to dish out a 93-69 loss to Presentation
College on Saturday in the Super Eight Classic in Aberdeen.
"We came out of the gates on fire Saturday night," said Kooiman. "We
learned our lesson from the night before and just kept the pressure on
PC the entire first half, leading by 21 (44-23
at halftime. We pushed the lead to as many as 33 points in the second
half."
Trojans 105, UMM 98
The Trojans forged a slim 38-36, first-half-ending lead before UMM tied
the game at 84-84 at the end of regulation Friday.
DSU's Blake Hyde and Leon Blue each popped in 19 points to lead six
Trojans into double-figures scoring territory.
Joe Backus and Ian Wright had 16 points apiece, Donald Williams had 14
and Anthony Scott 10 as the Trojans shot a healthy 53 percent, 32-68,
from the field and 22-26 at the free throw line.
Williams had nine of the Trojans' 42 rebounds. Backus added eight nabs
and Blue seven.
Seven Cougars had double-digit scoring, paced by Brendan McNally's
game-high 22 points. Will Jensen added 16 points and James Carr and
Brent Durensky 13 apiece. John Hebert had 12 points and Corey Kelzenberg
and Phil Allen each had 10.
McNally also claimed seven of UMM's 37 rebounds.
Trojans 93, PC 69
Shuan Wisdom launched seven 3-pointers and powered the Trojans' offense
with 25 points Saturday.
Wisdom's long-distance shooting, along with DSU's first-half defense,
which limited PC to just 23 points, were keys to the Trojans' win, said
Kooiman.
Blue added 14 points, Joe Backus 12 and Williams 10 to account for much
of the Trojans' scoring as DSU shot 60 percent, 35-58, from the field.
DSU outrebounded Presentation 40-32 with Blue claiming eight rebounds
and Backus five.
Presentation, which shot just 27-70 from the field, got 21 team-leading
from Marcus Robinson and seven-point games from Trevor Krawchuk and Max
Wind. Krawchuk also had seven rebounds.
