University's game never got on track Friday as the Trojans dropped an
84-62 decision to Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell's Corn Palace.
Dakota Wesleyan (4-6) forged a 42-27 lead at halftime on 42-percent,
13-for-31, field goal shooting and then kept the Trojans at bay in the
second half, outscoring DSU 42-35.
It was a disheartening loss for the Trojans, according to head coach
Wade Kooiman.
"I was disappointed in our overall effort and mental approach to Friday
night's game," said Kooiman, who is in his first year as the Trojans'
head coach. "We played hard in spurts -- but not for 40 minutes. If we
expect to beat good teams on the road, we need to stay focused and
aggressive the entire game."
DSU (3-4), which was limited to just 16-51 field goal shooting, was led
by Leon Blue, Joe Backus and Shuan Wisdom.
Blue, who shot 5-12 from the field and 6-8 at the free throw line,
dropped in 16 points. Backus and Wisdom added 15 points apiece. Blake
Hyde scored all of his six points for the Trojans with two 3-pointers.
DWU got its scoring push from Brock Seim and Kevin Talley, who had
respective 27- and 23-point nights for the Tigers as the pair combined
for 15-28 field goal shooting. Seim also had a perfect 13-13 night at
the charity stripe.
Travis Johnson added seven counters and Steven Deibert, Tommy Trent and
Preston Braughton each had six.
Dakota Wesleyan also won the rebounds battle 40-37 with Seim completing
a double-double with 12 rebounds. Johnson also had seven rebounds for
the Tigers.
The Trojans got nine rebounds by Backus and five more from Anthony
Scott.
DWU forced 17 Trojan turnovers while they miscued just 12 times. Seim
had four steals for the Tigers; Blue had three for DSU.
"We have a big game this week," concluded Kooiman. "I'm sure the guys
are ready to get to work and forget about DWU."
DSU opens up its Dakota Athletic Conference schedule at the DSU Field
house Thursday against Jamestown College.
Jamestown comes to Madison with a 2-5 record, including a close 88-84
loss to Montana-Western Friday..
