Raphael makes mark in paint as
Trojans 'unique' guard

By: DAN HOLSWORTH, Madison Daily Leader Sports Editor

Dakota State University's Sal Raphael is rapidly becoming less of a secret weapon for the Trojans on the basketball court.

Raphael has played -- and leaped -- his way into the top five rebounders' list in all of NAIA Division II men's basketball.

His 165 rebounds in just 15 games has given him an 11-rebounds-per-game average, good enough for third place, just behind Northwestern Iowa's Jeff VerSteeg, who has 11.08-rpg, and top-rated Noble Anthony of Montreat College, who has 11.59 rpg.

Raphael's feat is rare, considering that he is just 6-foot-1 and plays the two guard position in basketball.

"Sal is unique because he is such a great rebounder from that position," says Trojan head coach Tim Schuring. "Most two guards display great perimeter play, and their rebounding is secondary. With Sal, the rest of his game feeds off his rebounding."
