No. 13 South Dakota Mines broke the
game open late in the last five
minutes of the game and scored a
79-65 Dakota Athletic Conference win
over No. 18 Dakota State in women’s
college basketball. With the
score tied at 60, Mines outscored
the Lady T's 19-5 to cap off a great
weekend of basketball.
With the win the Lady Hardrockers
moved into a first place tie in the
conference with Minot State.
Mines (16-3 and 4-1) had four
players score in double digits.
Season-leading scorer Melanie Vedvei
dropped in 17, while Bethany Holyoak
added a double-double with 15 points
and 12 rebounds.
Nichole Martin added 11 and Jerika
Ihnen added 10 off the bench for the
Mines cause.
"I was
disappointed in our defense
tonight," said DSU coach Jeff
Dittman. "Mines is too good an
offensive team to allow
them to move the ball as easily as
we did. We were constantly
reacting to their ball movement
rather than pressuring and denying.
We did not play with the
aggressiveness we played against
Black Hills last night."
Vedvei, Mines’ senior All-American
guard, also added seven rebounds,
four assists and three steals as
Mines picked up their eighth win in
a row.
Leading 35-33 at the intermission
the Lady Rockers fell behind by as
many as four points in the second
half. The last time on a Nicole
Geraets’ basket that gave DSU a
60-56 lead with 7:18 to play.
Mines regained the lead for good
61-60 on Vedvei’s layin. She then
canned a 3-pointer as they outscored
Dakota State 18-5 the rest of the
way.
Dakota State knocked off Black Hills
State on Friday 72-64 to knock the
Yellow Jackets out of the top spot
in the standings.
The Lady Trojans (11-8 and 3-2) were
led by Jessica VanLoy with 13 points
and Nicole Geraets with 12.
Mines had a 42-38 rebound advantage.
Laura Tewes hauled in a game-high 15
for DSU.
