In a battle
of top 10 NAIA women's
basketball teams, the No. 2
ranked Northwestern Red Raiders
topped No. 7 Dakota State
University 90-83 Saturday at the
DSU Fieldhouse.
DSU (8-6) led by as much as five points, 11-6, in the
early stages of the ballgame,
but Northwestern (13-1) took
charge of the game in the
remaining 15 minutes of the
first half.
The Red Raiders tucked in a 44-33 lead and maintained
the lead throughout the games
final twenty minutes. DSU
did outscore Northwestern 46-44
in the second half.
"Offensively, we did a good job of pushing the ball in
the open court and attacking in
the half court," said DSU coach
Jeff Dittman. "But, our
defense needed to be able to
make some stops and we just
couldn't slow down their offense
that is #1 in the country in
points per game. Jess and
Laura did an excellent job of
slowing down Deb Remmerde (leads
the country in scoring at 32
points per game) but we let some
of Northwestern's other athletes
have a career high night against
us."
In the first half, DSU senior forward Laura Tewes, who
scored 18 points in the game,
put in her 1,000th career point.
Northwestern was led by the double-figure scoring of
four players. Amy Larson,
who scored 24 points with her
9-for-17 field goal shooting,
pushed the Red Raiders to
49-percent, 34-70 field goal
shooting. Larson also
dished out nine assists.
Randa Hulstein had 18 points for the winners, who also
got 13 points each from Debbie
Remmerde and Becca Hurley.
Jessica VanLoy topped the Lady T's scoring with 24
point, tying Larson for
game-high honors. VanLoy's
8-13 field goal shooting helped
power DSU's offense to
45-percent, 30-67 field goal
shooting.
Maria Gengler was the Lady T's other double-digit
scorer, earning 11 points.
She also had three blocked
shots, and VanLoy added four
assists.
Despite the loss, the Lady T's had a 41-38 edge over
Northwestern. Tewes yanked
down seven rebounds, while
Gengler and VanLoy each had
five.
For the Red Raiders, Remmerde puled down eight rebounds
and Crystal Algood added six.
