Head coach Jeff Dittman and the No. 9 Dakota State Trojans came into Tuesday night's NAIA women's basketball game in Laddie E. Cimpl Arena with hopes of reversing a losing trend to the No. 17 Chuck Iverson coached Mount Marty Lancers.

The Lancers did not let that happen as they used a couple timely 3-point shooting runs and solid defense to defeat the Lady T's 69-61 in Yankton.

"It is a case where these are two very good basketball teams and they know each well," said Dittman.  "Mount Marty's beaten us four of the last five times so we were trying to keep history from continuing to repeat itself.  Unfortunately, we didn't have the same intensity that Mt. Marty had and they beat to offensive and defensive spots and to lose balls and kept the pressure on us all game.  I'm pretty  disappointed with our intensity tonight."

Naturally, Iverson showered his team in praise after defeating the higher-ranked Lady T's (5-1).

"We are really pleased with the victory against a very good basketball team that is very hot," Iverson said. "I thought we did a decent job defensively on them. We gave them some looks. We broke down a few times, but that is going to happen. Offensively, I thought we did a nice job of attacking."

Junior guard Katelynn Kunz lead the Lancers (4-2) with a game-high 21 points in 24 minutes of action off the bench. Senior guard Tevan Wenbourne was the only Lancer starter in double-figures with 10 points.

Iverson said Kunz, the 5-foot-10, Parker, S.D., native, was one of the main reasons why the Lancers came away with the win. "She can put the ball down on the floor and get inside and score," Iverson said. "She is so versatile. She can also take that 3-point shot, which makes her a tough handle because teams have got to get out and guard her out there, but yet at the same time be able to control and stop that penetration."

The Lady T's had three players in double-figures, but were lead by senior forward Laura Tewes 14 points.

The Lancers jumped out to a 7-3 lead after a Michelle Amundson 3-pointer at the 16:20 mark, which forced Dittman to call a timeout and talk to his team.

The Lady T's got to within one point three times (9-8, 11-10, 13-12) in the first half, but could not take the lead.

From the 13:00 mark of the first half, the Lancers outscored the Lady T's 15-4 in a span of six minutes and 17 seconds.

The Lancers got a layup by Wenbourne, a put back by junior Dana Marquardt, a 3-pointer by freshman Lacey Powell and a 3-pointer by Kunz to pull away.

The Lady T's, however, outscored the Lancers 13-9 in the final 6:43 of the first half to close to within 10, 39-29.

Both team's traded baskets until the 11:44 mark of the second half. After that, the Lancers dialed up the 3-point shooting to pull away.

Wenbourne connected and then Kunz knocked it down from three on the next possession to give the Lancers a 55-41 lead with 11:12 left to play.

Iverson said the Lancers 3-point shooting allowed them to pull away when they needed to.

"We have a lot of people that can knock that shot down," Iverson said. "Lacey Powell comes in and knocks down a couple. Katelynn Kouns had a big night for us, a tremendous night for us. It was nice to see Tevan take a 3-point shot."

The Lancers largest lead of the second half came after Wenbourne made a layup and was fouled with 6:36 remaining in the game. She made the free throw, which put MMC up by 15, 62-47.

From there, the Lady T's slowly chipped away at the lead and got to within seven (66-59) with 1:22 remaining in the game when Tewes broke free in the low post for a layup.

But the Lancers did not slip up in the final 82 seconds and held on with three free throws and allowed the Lady T's just one field goal to get the 69-61 victory.

Iverson said he hopes the win gives the Lancers confidence heading into conference play.

"Boy I tell you what, we have a tough road of games coming up here," Iverson said. "It was a huge win for us going into the conference now. We'll get a nice break over Thanksgiving. Its been a long couple months here. We've been going for quite a while without a break. The girls deserve the time off."
