Lady T's Crunch Mayville
Win DAC Title

By Dan  Holsworth - Sports Editor

Dakota State University's Lady T's raced to a 47-27 halftime edge over Mayville State University on Wednesday in Madison. The Lady T's went on to hand Mayville an 87-64 defeat and, in the process, claimed a share of the Dakota Athletic Conference regular-season championship.

"Again, we got off to a great start," said DSU Coach Jeff Dittman. DSU and Black Hills State both finished the season with 11-3 loop marks, making this is the third tie for the title in the eight-year-old DAC.

"Our seniors have now won three consecutive conference championships in women's basketball," said Dittman. "This is a rare accomplishment in the conference." Only former DAC member the University of Mary (Bismarck, N.D.) had done it before.

Overall, the Lady T's have now claimed four women's loop titles -- more than any other member school. In a tiebreaker, the Lady T's became the postseason tourney's No. 1 seed and will host No. 8 Valley City State on Sunday at the DSU Fieldhouse at 3 p.m.

The Lady T's split their games against Black Hills State. In the second level of the tiebreaking process, DSU won both of its games against Minot State, the third-place team, while BHSU split with Minot. (Overall, the Lady T's take a 19-9 overall mark into postseason play.)

In Wednesday's game, DSU was powered by the scoring of starters Laura Tewes and Jessica VanLoy and reservist Kaitlyn Kramer. Tewes and VanLoy combined for 10-for-16 field goal shooting on their way to respective 14- and 10-point nights. Kramer, went 6-11, bucketing 12 points. As a team, the Lady T's shot almost 49 percent from the field, going 34-70. They also shot free throws at a 70-percent, 14-20 clip.

In outrebounding Mayville 39-36, DSU was sparked by Tewes with nine rebounds, and Tricia Boldt added seven. VanLoy also had seven steals as Mayville turned the ball over 19 times, compared to DSU's 10 miscues.

"Our offense has been executing very well, and our defense has caused a number of turnovers," said Dittman. "If we continue this type of intensity throughout the next few weeks, we will have a chance at doing very well in the postseason tournament."

Mayville (8-6 in the conference and 14-11 overall) was led by Laura Big Crow's game-high 17 points. Cassie Leraas and Lindsay Saunes had 14 points apiece.

Danielle Guilbert had eight rebounds, and Leraas and Ashleigh Tronen each had five.
