Lady T's Rush
Past Valley City, Jamestown
By Dan Holsworth, Sports Editor
Dakota State University
got out to two fast starts in
its at-home games against Valley
City State Friday and Jamestown
College Saturday, resulting in
convincing 91-48 and
68-56 wins.
The victories sent the Lady T's
into a tie with Minot State
and Black
Hills State at the top of
the Dakota Athletic Conference,
all
with
identical 5-2 league
marks.
Lady T's 91, VCSU 48
Valley City never
recovered from a 26-3 scoring
onslaught by the Lady T's in the
game's first 10-plus minutes.
DSU had a huge 51-15 halftime
lead over the Vikings.
"We got off to a great start,"
said DSU Coach Jeff Dittman.
"Holding a team to just 15
first-half points is
exceptional."
The Lady T's, shooting a healthy
59 percent (36-for-61), were
powered by the double-figures
scoring of reserve players
Angela Carr, Kaitlyn Kramer and
Megan Swecker,
who led 14 Lady T's in scoring.
Carr, who went 6-7, pumped in 18
points, and Kramer and Swecker
each had 10 points, combining
for 8-13 field goal shooting.
Nicole Geraets added nine
points, while Jessica VanLoy and
Tricia Boldt added eight apiece.
Boldt led DSU off the boards
with six rebounds. Laura Tewes
and Carmyn Streitz each had four
steals. "Our underclassmen got
some valuable minutes in this
game and played well in doing
so," added Dittman. "It also
gave us a chance to rest some of
the seniors. They have been
logging some long minutes due to
the challenging schedule we've
played."
Valley City, shooting just 19-62
from the field, got 11 points
from Terra Hilliut. Abby Drallo
added eight counters and Andrea
Hummel six. Brittany Olson had
eight team-tops rebounds and
Hilliut added five.
Lady T's 68, JC 56
The Lady T's had another
fast start Saturday, going ahead
14-4 with just over four minutes
played in the first half. DSU,
which led 36-17 at halftime,
went on to lift its overall
record to 13-8 with the win,
despite being outscored 39-32 in
the second half.
"Offensively, we had good
execution and good shots
throughout the game," said
Dittman. "We just
didn't
hit many in the last 10 minutes.
That, some turnovers and 17
offensive rebounds, allowed
Jamestown to get back into the
game."
Saturday's game was highlighted
by Maria Gengler, who scored
eight points and crossed over
the 1,000-point mark when she
scored her fourth point of the
ballgame. She also had a huge
night on defense, providing DSU
with nine blocked shots. DSU was
sparked by VanLoy's 14 points.
Geraets and Tewes also had
double-digit scoring, collecting
12 and 10 points. The Lady T's
had two more field goals, 20-18,
than Jamestown.
Jamestown, though, outrebounded
the Lady T's 42-40. "We did not
keep Jamestown off the offensive
boards, and that is something we
will have to improve on before
we play them again this Friday,"
said Dittman. "They are No. 1 in
the conference in rebounding,
and they proved it against us."
Jamestown got 10 team-tops
tallies by Giuli Vattiano, nine
more by Nicole Zerr and eight
from Kristin Klawon. Amber
DeBoer added seven rebounds and
six points, and Cori Deubek
tacked on six rebounds. DSU goes
up to Valley City and Jamestown
this coming weekend.
