Dickinson State coach Guy Fridley’s claim that Dakota State is the best
women’s basketball team
in the Dakota Athletic
Conference might not be
far off.
The
Lady
T's had four
players score in double
figures Friday night as
they coasted to a 93-47
DAC victory at Memorial
Fieldhouse.
“They kept the train
going, it’s hard to stop
a train when it’s full
speed ahead,” Fridley
said.
Angela Carr scored a
team-high 13 points off
the bench for the
Trojans (17-9, 9-3 DAC)
while
the front line of
Laura Tewes, Jessica
VanLoy and Maria
Gengler each added 12
points.
"We did a great job
defensively tonight,"
said Dakota State coach
Jeff Dittman. "We
pressured well, got into
passing lanes and got
steals, and blocked
shots when they got to
our interior defense.
Over the past two
months, our defense has
continued to improve and
that put us in the race
for another conference
championship."
The
Lady
T's, who
outscored DSU 52-20 in
the paint, built a 48-20
halftime lead behind
their tough inside game.
“I thought we were
pretty physical and they
pushed us around and got
after us defensively,”
Fridley said.
DSU senior Brittany
Mesa scored a game-high
20 points and added six
rebounds. Ashley Bakich-Emmons
had 14 points, five
steals and four assists.
Dakota State held a
53-28 advantage on the
boards.
“They’re just a very
difficult match for us,”
Fridley said. “They not
only convert on some
shots, but they’re a
good combination of
everything.”
The Blue Hawks (8-18,
4-8 DAC) play Mayville
State at 4 p.m. CST
today.
Fridley hopes his
team can forget about
Friday and pick up the
pieces against the
Comets.
“It’ still counts as
one loss, that’s the way
we’ve got to take it,”
he said.
Dakota State has a big
match-up with fellow
frontrunner Minot State.
Both teams enter the
contest with 9-3
conference marks.
"We had a great game
with Minot in January,"
said Dittman. "We
controlled the first
half and built a 21
point lead but they came
roaring back to within
three in the second
half. Fortunately,
we were able to hold on.
I expect a very fast
tempo as both teams like
to push the ball.
It should be a great
college game for our
fans."
