In a battle of ranked Dakota
Athletic Conference teams, No. 18
Dakota State got the better of No. 7
Black Hills State as the Lady T's
downed the Yellow Jackets 72-64 on
Friday night.
"Our defense and rebounding was
excellent tonight," said Lady T's
coach Jeff Dittman. "Black
Hills got up on us early but we were
able to turn our defense up another
notch and took a late lead in the
first half. After that, we
never trailed."
Dakota State (11-7 and 3-1) had six
players score in double figures.
Laura Tewes led the way with 17,
Angela Carr had 13, Jessica VanLoy
scored 11 and Maria Gengler, Jill
Hansen and Tricia Boldt each had 10
for DSU.
Carr and Boldt came off the bench
for the Trojans, whose reserves
outscored BHSU 23-16. "Angie
was outstanding tonight," state
Dittman. She did a great job
of applying pressure to Black Hill's
point guard and forced turnovers
that got us some transition baskets.
She was also shooting the ball well
on the offensive end, whether from
behind the three-point line or off
penetration. She was reading
the defense very well tonight."
Black Hills State (15-3 and 3-1) had
an eight-game winning streak
snapped.
Lacey Haughian posted a
double-double with 18 points and 11
rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.
Brittany Furhman was the only other
BHSU player in double digits with
12.
Leading 30-26, the Trojans opened
the second half with a 18-6 run for
a 48-32 lead with 11:36 left to play
in the game.
Black Hills committed 28 turnovers
and committed 24 fouls, as DSU went
15-of-19 from the free throw line.
Tewes led Dakota State with nine
rebounds, and VanLoy dished out
seven assists.
Black Hills held the biggest lead of
the first half 19-12 on a Lindsey
Buthe basket in the lane.
A Tewes 3-pointer tied the game at
25 with 1:41 left in the half.
