In
a battle of nationally-ranked women's
basketball teams,
the higher-rated squad won
Wednesday in Orange City, Iowa.
Northwestern, rated No. 3 in the
NAIA Division II preseason
poll, handed No. 6 Dakota State
University a 63-56 loss.
The Red Raiders kept their record
unblemished at 6-0, while
the DSU's Lady T's fell to 4-2.
The Lady T's outscored Northwestern
32-27 in the second
half, but came up short at the
buzzer.
Northwestern put DSU into a 10-0
game-opening deficit before Jessica
VanLoy scored DSU's first points at the
14:27 mark of the first half.
The closest the Lady T's got to
Northwestern was when Sara
Nelson converted a jump shot with
3:45 left in the period,
slicing Northwestern's lead to
24-20.
The Red Raiders gave themselves a 40-28
cushion by the 17:36 mark when Deb
Remmerde put up a jump shot.
The Lady T's staged a 10-2 scoring run
during the last 4 1/2 minutes of the
ballgame, but fell seven points at the
end.
DSU's defense limited Northwestern's
offense to just
38-percent, 23-for-60 field goal
shooting, but the Lady T's
had poor free throw shooting,
going just 7-23 at the charity stripe.
Laura
Tewes was the Lady T's top scorer,
snapping in 11
points. Angela Carr also had 10 points
as the Lady T's went
22-74 from the field.
Nicole Geraets tacked on eight
points and Alyssa Kirk seven
for DSU, and Maria Gengler and
VanLoy each added six.
Gengler swiped 17 of the Lady T's
54 rebounds, and Tewes
added nine.
VanLoy also had five assists and
six steals.
Jamie Hoegh and Remmerde sparked
Northwestern's win, having
respective 20- and 18-point
scoring nights. Amy Larson and
Mandy Carr had 8-point outings
for the Red Raiders.
Crystal Algood had 10 of
Northwestern's 46 rebounds, and
Carr had eight. Hoegh and Miranda
Boekhout added seven
rebounds apiece to the Red
Raiders' total. Boekhout also had seven
assists.
DSU hosts Dakota Wesleyan on Friday in a
7:30 game at the
DSU Fieldhouse.
Northwestern's
next action comes Saturday at Yankton
when the Red Raiders play Mount Marty
College at 2 p.m.
