In a battle of nationally-ranked women's basketball teams, the higher-rated squad won Wednesday in Orange City, Iowa.  Northwestern, rated No. 3 in the NAIA Division II preseason poll, handed No. 6 Dakota State University a 63-56 loss.  The Red Raiders kept their record unblemished at 6-0, while the DSU's Lady T's fell to 4-2.

The Lady T's outscored Northwestern 32-27 in the second half, but came up short at the buzzer.  Northwestern put DSU into a 10-0 game-opening deficit before Jessica VanLoy scored DSU's first points at the 14:27 mark of the first half.

The closest the Lady T's got to Northwestern was when Sara Nelson converted a jump shot with 3:45 left in the period, slicing Northwestern's lead to 24-20.  The Red Raiders gave themselves a 40-28 cushion by the 17:36 mark when Deb Remmerde put up a jump shot.

The Lady T's staged a 10-2 scoring run during the last 4 1/2 minutes of the ballgame, but fell seven points at the end.  DSU's defense limited Northwestern's offense to just 38-percent, 23-for-60 field goal shooting, but the Lady T's had poor free throw shooting, going just 7-23 at the charity stripe.

Laura Tewes was the Lady T's top scorer, snapping in 11 points. Angela Carr also had 10 points as the Lady T's went 22-74 from the field.  Nicole Geraets tacked on eight points and Alyssa Kirk seven for DSU, and Maria Gengler and VanLoy each added six.  Gengler swiped 17 of the Lady T's 54 rebounds, and Tewes added nine.  VanLoy also had five assists and six steals.

Jamie Hoegh and Remmerde sparked Northwestern's win, having respective 20- and 18-point scoring nights. Amy Larson and Mandy Carr had 8-point outings for the Red Raiders.  Crystal Algood had 10 of Northwestern's 46 rebounds, and Carr had eight. Hoegh and Miranda Boekhout added seven rebounds apiece to the Red Raiders' total. Boekhout also had seven assists.

DSU hosts Dakota Wesleyan on Friday in a 7:30 game at the DSU Fieldhouse.  Northwestern's next action comes Saturday at Yankton when the Red Raiders play Mount Marty College at 2 p.m.
