Two of the NAIA's "Top Twenty"
ranked women's basketball teams
battled it out at the DSU
Fieldhouse Wednesday, when 17th
ranked Mayville tripped up 12th
rated Dakota State University
99-92 in the DAC's opener for
both ballclubs.
DSU raced to a 10-3 lead
in the games first three
minutes, but Mayville (9-3)
outscored the Lady T's by 10
points, 44-34, in the first
half.
In the second half, Mayville
went ahead of DSU by double
digits before settling for a
slim 52-48 second-half scoring
edge and winning
99-92.
Four Lady T's were double-digit
scorers. Jessica VanLoy,
Sara Nelson and Nicole Geraets
all wound up with 18 points
apiece, and Angela Carr had 16,
contributing to DSU's almost-50
percent, 35-71, field goal
shooting.
The Lady T's had 11
three-pointers, with Geraets
launching four and VanLoy and
Carr having three apiece.
Six Mayville players scored in
double figures. Laura Big
Crow led the way with her
game-high 20 points, pushing the
Comets to 50-percent,
36-for-71, field goal shooting,
which included going 10-18 in
3-pointers.
Michelle Halverson was right
behind with 19 points and Nikki
Munneke added 18. Cassie
Leraas and Shonna Soeby had 14
points apiece and Kelly Latozke
had 10. Halverson also
helped out in a huge way,
dishing out 10 assists.
Mayville had a slight 41-40
rebound edge over the Lady T's
as Big Crow claimed nine
rebounds and Munneke eight.
DSU's Nelson completed her
double-double with 10 rebounds
and Maria Gengler added eight.
