Dakota State built big leads and Dickinson State tore them down.  Yet the Blue Hawks couldn’t break through the Trojans’ walls Friday night at Scott Gymnasium.

Dakota State withstood Dickinson comebacks in both the first and second half and held on for a 64-58 victory over the Blue Hawks in Dakota Athletic Conference women’s basketball at Scott Gymnasium.

“We laid down for a little while,” Dakota junior Laura Tewes said. “We relaxed and they took advantage. … We just waited for good shots, didn’t force things and tried to keep it under control.”  Tewes led the Trojans with 19 points and 10 rebounds – six offensive – and was all over the floor.

The 6-foot-1 forward led Dakota’s outstanding zone defense that kept Dickinson out of the post, played smooth both inside and outside on offense and hit 9 of 11 free throws – missing only her last two.

“I thought Laura was just possessed tonight on the boards,” Lady T's coach Jeff Dittman said. “That was key. … When we finally got them stopped, it was usually by an offensive rebound and a put-back.”

The Trojans had a 39-28 advantage on the boards and had 17 offensive rebounds.

Dakota State got out to a 14-2 lead but DSU hit three 3-pointers in a span of 1 minute, 22 seconds midway through the first half to tie it 16-16.

“We did a nice job when we came back because we took care of the basketball and got defensive rebounds too,” Dickinson coach Guy Fridley said.

However, the Lady T's built a 35-26 lead by halftime with their 3-point and free-throw shooting.  They then went on an eight-point run to start the second half, building a 43-28 lead.

Although the Lady T's never trailed in the second halfDickinson shaved the lead to 51-49 on LaDonna Downs’ free throws with five minutes remaining.  Ashley Bakich and Andrea Staley made back-to-back 3-pointers which closed the gap.

“We could come back, but we just dug too big of a hole,” Dickinson senior Dana Johnson said.  Johnson was essential in the Blue Hawks cutting the lead in both halves.  She hit four 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 16 points. Staley had 13 points and cleaned up for Dickinson on fast breaks. DSU had eight 3-pointers.

“The last two weeks we’ve found a rhythm offensively where we’re knocking down the outside shots,” Fridley said.  Dickinson trailed 56-54 after Staley made a fast break layup off her own steal.

But Dakota held the Blue Hawks at bay, forced turnovers and bad shots while Tewes scored five of the Trojans’ final seven points of the game to seal the win.

The Blue Hawks finished with 25 turnovers.  “We’ve got to find a happy medium,” Fridley said. “We’re great sometimes handling the basketball and tonight we were careless.”
