Dakota State University's Lady T's gave up an early lead against Black Hills State University Saturday at the DSU Fieldhouse, but a game-ending basket at the buzzer by Maria Gengler gave DSU the 85-83 win.

"We knew it was going to be a tough ballgame," said DSU Coach Jeff Dittman.  "Black Hills is a very physical match-up and this was going to be a very intense game with national tournament implications for both teams."

BHSU and DSU exchanged leads in the first half, with BHSU claiming a 7-point lead three minutes into the game.  The tables were turned about four minutes later when DSU took an eight-point lead.  DSU maintained the lead to finish the half up 47-37.

The Lady T's opened the second half with a drive that put them up
56-39, but BHSU slowly narrowed the lead until tying the game 77-77 with 3 minutes left on the clock.

BHSU had a six-point lead with one minute left, but DSU countered with a field goal by Laura Tewes that brought DSU within 4 points, 79-83.
With 37 seconds left in the game, after a DSU steal, a foul called on BHSU's Lacey Haughian gave the Lady T's Jill Hansen a shot at two free throws, which she made.

Three seconds later, Angela Carr got DSU another steal and was fouled as she went up for a shot.  She also made both free throws to tie the game 83-83 with 34 seconds remaining in the game.

BHSU took possession of the ball, but not for long. With 12 seconds left on the clock, Maria Gengler blocked a Black Hills shot and Laura Tewes grabbed the rebound and made the outlet pass to Jessica VanLoy.  Jess dribbled the length of the court and pulled up for a twelve foot jumper that hit the heal of the rim and bounced out.  DSU's Maria Gengler grabbed the rebound and sank the game-winning shot at the buzzer.

"It's a great lesson to our athletes that you play every second of the ballgame," Dittman said. "I think everyone in the building figured the game was over when BH was up by six."

Although the winning shot was made by Gengler, Dittman said that five different people figured into key plays in the last 40 seconds of the game.

Dittman said match-ups between DSU and BHSU have a history of ending with a game-winning basket or a shot that ties the game.  "In 2001 at Spearfish, Hali McClelland grabbed an offensive rebound and hit the game-winning shot with five seconds to go," Dittman said.

Two years ago in the DSU Fieldhouse, a three-point shot at the buzzer by Robin Grinager tied the game, giving DSU an overtime opportunity to win.  "We have a history of close games against Black Hills," he said. "Fortunately, we've been on the winning side in recent ballgames."

Leading the Lady T's were Hansen with 19 points, Tewes with 14 and Angela Carr with 12. Gengler added nine points for DSU.

The next action for the Lady Trojans is Tuesday against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology at the DSU Fieldhouse.  Game time is 7:00 p.m.

Dittman said fans won't be disappointed; DSU is 1-1 in regular-season action against S.D. School of Mines.

"We expect the same type of ballgame," he said. "It should be a barn-burner."
